Understanding Peru’s Climate Conditions, Weather and Seasons

Understanding climate, seasons and summer in Peru

When people talk about diversity in Peru, they are not just talking about its culture.

Weather conditions are equally diverse and quite different than what you can expect in other parts of the world.

To begin with, you need to keep in mind two things.

First, seasons in Peru are classified as wet season and dry season.

Second, Peru is divided into three distinct geographical locations. They are La Costa (coastal), La Sierra (Andes) and La Selva (Amazon).

Depending upon the geographical location you are at, you will experience different weather patterns.

La Costa

La Costa refers to the coastal regions of Peru. It faces the Pacific Ocean on western Peru.

This is where Peru’s capital Lima is located and you get subtropical desert climate.

Here, it ranges from pleasant weather conditions with nice sunny days to cloudy or foggy skies during winter. You get very little rainfall in this region and it mostly stays dry.

With hardly any rain, days can see clear skies or a scenic cloud cover. Just perfect to enjoy the Pacific coast almost throughout the year.

La Sierra

The La Sierra (Andes mountains) region is where you will find most of Peru’s famous archaeological sites.

This part of Peru can be considered as the central region of the nation.

Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world is located in this Andean region.

Due to the high altitude at several locations of this region, you can expect cold weather conditions. You also get heavy rainfall during the wet season over here.

La Selva

The La Selva region is home to Peru’s Amazon Rainforest. As you can imagine with the Amazon jungle and its intense eco-diversity, this region can have extreme weather conditions.

Here, you will get hot, humid and dry weather that is accompanied by regular rainfall.

The Peruvian Amazon basin or Amazon region has equatorial to tropical climate conditions.

La Selva occupies the eastern part of Peru.

Quick glance at Peru’s climate metrics

Now that you have some understanding of Peru’s distinct regions, here’s a quick glance at the country’s key climate metrics.

Summer season: December to February is considered as the summer months in Peru.

Warmest month: February

Winter season: June to August is considered as the winter or coldest months in Peru.

Coldest month: August

Rainy season: November to March is considered as the wet season with regular to heavy rainfall.

Wet season: November to March

Wettest month: January and February

Dry season: May to August

Driest month: June

Ideal time of year to visit Peru

The best time to visit Peru depends on a number of factors and the regions you wish to visit.

However, as an overall average, these are the key metrics on the best time to visit Peru.

High season: May to September is considered as the peak season for tourists.

Low season: January to April is considered as the low season due to frequent rainfall.

Best month: June is considered the best month to visit Peru as you can enjoy both the coastal region and Peruvian Andes.

The dry season accompanied with the winter months is considered as the best time of year to visit Peru.

Shoulder season: October to November is considered as the shoulder months in Peru.

Hiking season: May to September, which is considered the best season in Peru due to less rain and lower temperatures.

Final points on weather and when to visit Peru

1) Remember, weather and seasons in the southern hemisphere work different from rest of the world.

Therefore, when you want to spend summer in Peru, ask yourself does it mean your summer or the Peruvian summer?

2) The peak seasons can be quite expensive and crowded but you can explore all parts of Peru.

The low season can see regular rainfall but at the same time is cheaper with lesser crowds.

Hence the best time to visit Peru is not necessarily the peak season. You could visit during November and December to avoid crowds but still visit most of the best places in Peru.

3) La Costa or the Peruvian coast does not get much rain. Hence you can enjoy here throughout the year.

However, this part of Peru does see high temperatures and high humidity during summer.

Another thing to remember, during winter there will be heavy cloud cover instead of clear skies.

The La Sierra region with the gorgeous mountains has a different story.

You will get comparatively low temperatures but moving around can be affected in summer due to rain.

4) Climate of Peru is extremely diverse. It is extremely difficult to talk about the average temperature as it can range drastically from region to region.

Just know that Peru’s coast sees average daytime temperatures of about 25 °C to 35 °C during summer. It gets cooler as you move towards the mountains.

While the average temperature remains pleasant during winter in the coastal areas, it drops drastically in the La Sierra region.

However, Cusco on its own is one of the best places to visit in Peru.

It used to be at one point the capital of the Inca Empire. The entire city and its surroundings are jam-packed with the best of Incan and Spanish architecture.

The archaeological ruins in and around Cusco are some of the most crucial historical landmarks of all time in Peru.

7) Trek to Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain at Peru

I remember the first time I saw pictures of Rainbow Mountain on the internet.

The colors were simply mesmerizing. It felt like a landscape from another planet.

Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca as it is locally known, can be considered a natural wonder of the world.

The variety of colors that you see on top of Rainbow Mountain is thanks to mineral deposits.

These deposits that have been there since millions of years were discovered after the snow melted thanks to global warming.

Today, it is one of the most awe-inspiring natural landscapes of South America.

To get to Rainbow Mountain, you need to first take a 2-hour private transfer ride from Cusco. After that, it is about a 2-to-3-hour trek to the summit of the mountain.

Be warned though that the trek is not an easy one. It is moderate to difficult even for seasoned trekkers.

Nevertheless, the journey is completely worth the effort. The panoramic views from top are simply breathtaking.

The colors of the mountain on top are nothing like you have ever experienced before.

Local guides take you all the way to the top and also arrange for the private transfer from Cusco.

You will have a good time during the day trip with a hearty breakfast and lunch provided by tour operators.

There is also a possibility of renting horses at a small village before the trek to ease things considerably.

8) Walk with Llamas on the Andean Mountain Ecosystem

Llamas near Machu Picchu in Peru

There are times when an animal or wildlife gets completely associated with the culture or identity of a country.

Komodo dragons in Indonesia or tigers in India are examples of this.

Similarly, llamas are part of Peruvian culture and identity. Every time you think of a llama, you think of Peru.

Therefore, it is a must that you have a close encounter with these beautiful, gentle creatures.

What better way to interact with llamas than walking with them on the Andean Mountain ecosystem.

You have two choices here. About an hour from Cusco, you have the Llama Pack Project. It is an initiative meant for the conservation of the incredible Andean ecosystem.

Here, local guild members can take you for a gentle trek of an hour or so along with the llamas.

You walk along with the llamas through the gorgeous mountainside, learning more about the place and the animals.

There are snacks and lunch included in the half day tour.

This is a nice activity but you need to find your own way to the Llama Pack Project.

The other option is to visit a private llama and hiking center just about 20 minutes from Cusco. Here, transportation is included in your package.

You get to walk with the llamas in this tour as well. The only difference being this is a shorter tour and you do not learn about conservation efforts.

Final thoughts on spending an epic summer in Peru

Surreal experiences, outstanding accommodations and a delectable cuisine, it all goes together for spending a dream summer in Peru.

My suggestion would be to spend at least 14 days in Peru to get the best out of the country.

Do remember that if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, the seasons are inverted in Peru.

Therefore, you have a choice to make. Do you visit when its summer where you live, or when its summer in Peru?

Summer in Peru will see relatively fewer crowds but more rainfall in the Andes and Amazon regions.

Winter in Peru witnesses peak times for tourism. Temperatures range from mild near the coast to almost freezing in the mountains.

I personally believe, as long as you avoid the wettest months of January and February, you will be fine.

Furthermore, if possible, do visit Cusco during the Easter celebrations. Try to reach a day or two before Good Friday and stay a whole week. It is an experience that is just out of this world.
