Several neighborhoods in and around Katy come to life with spectacular holiday displays, Christmas carnivals and extravagant festivities.

Many of these are quite an experience and should not be missed at any cost.

Best Places for Christmas Lights in Katy, TX along with Houston

Before we start with our list, here’s what you should know.

Katy is considered both a suburb of Houston and part of the Greater Houston metropolitan area.

It is located on the Northwest of Houston and is about 11 square miles in size.

Katy also has the distinction of being one of the best places to live in Texas for a number of reasons.

So, I have prepared a list of the best places where you can soak in the Christmas magic including within Katy, its surrounding areas and in Houston.

Best Places to view Christmas Lights in Katy and Houston, Texas

The Light Park

The Light Park is one of the best annual Christmas light shows in Katy that takes place usually from the first week of November all the way to January 1st.

The venue is at the Typhoon Texas Waterpark Parking Lot and ticket prices start at $29 per car.

Visitors can enjoy dazzling light shows and holiday displays that includes millions of lights and upbeat festive music.

The Light Park is recommended for families, couples and solo-travelers and definitely gets you in the festive mood.

Prestonwood Forest

Prestonwood Forest has the reputation of being the best neighborhood near Houston for Christmas lights and holiday family events.

The annual ‘Nite of Lights’ festivities at Prestonwood Forest attracts thousands of visitors every year during the month of December.

The Christmas lights on display and holiday decorations in each house is simply stunning and must be experienced by all.

There is a friendly competition organized where all visitors can vote for the best block as well as the most well-decorated house.

You can walk around the neighborhood or just drive through to immerse yourself in the superb Christmas lights on display.

Each house in Prestonwood Forest goes above and beyond in their Christmas decorations and the whole area is worthy of the best Christmas neighborhood near Houston title.

Prestonwood Forest is about 36 miles from Katy, TX and 24 miles from Downtown Houston.

Pecan Grove

Pecan Grove is another favorite neighborhood for viewing Christmas lights.

Houses start their light installation well in advance and some of them can be quite elaborate.

Through the month of December, you can drive around this beautiful locality in Fort Bend County and as per the words used by residents – experience a magical winter wonderland.

Pecan Grove is about 17 miles from Katy, TX and 30 miles from Downtown Houston.

River Oaks Boulevard

River Oaks Boulevard is an upscale residential area in Houston that has some of the most well-decorated houses during the holiday season.

The River Oaks Country Club locality in particular is well-known for their Christmas events as well as spectacular Christmas lightings.

This is a great neighborhood for a drive-though Christmas lights viewing.

Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo is in general a great place to spend time with the family.

However, during the holiday season, it comes to life with an outstanding ‘zoo lights’ experience.

The special holiday event takes place usually from third week of November all the way to first week of January each year.

The timings of the Christmas zoo lights are from 5.30 pm to 10.30 pm. However, you need to book your entry time and once in there, you can stay till the end.

Booking tickets in advance from the Houston Zoo website is recommended. Note that the Christmas lights display is closed on Christmas Eve as well as Christmas Day.

One of the great attractions of the light displays in Houston Zoo is the tall color-changing Christmas tree. The light tunnel which is basically a canopy with lit butterflies and glowing flowers is a mesmerizing experience.

Space Center Houston

Space exploration with Christmas lights! Sign me up.

One of my personal favorites for Christmas lights, The Galaxy Lights event at Space Center Houston is where you need to be this holiday season.

Organized from November 12th to January 1st, go on a deep space exploration, experience kinetic light shows that have precise choreographed sequences with music and watch interactive holiday shows that are both fun and educational.

Space Center Houston combines the mysteries of space with Christmas lighting to create a distinct holiday display.

Entry tickets for the public start at $19.95 and the Galaxy Lights event is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The light installers at the Space Center Houston have done a wonderful job in creating a unique Christmas display but warn those with light sensitivity due to the intensity of some of the lights at the show.

Sugar Land Holiday Lights

The Sugar Land Holiday Lights is a spectacular annual event organized by Houston Methodist.

Located at Constellation Field, Sugar Land, TX, this fantastic Christmas carnival features excess of 3 million lights with several themed displays and a variety of vendors for shopping and holiday treats.

There is a Santa till December 23rd and also the carnival includes several fantastic rides.

The Sugar Land Holiday Lights is a comprehensive Christmas carnival that can be enjoyed with friends and family.

Thanks to the number of vendors present, you can enjoy some delectable food along with hot chocolate drinks that are perfect for the holiday season.

It is recommended to check out the Sugar Land Holiday Lights website for schedule of special events and also for booking tickets online.

Sugar Land Holiday Lights is located about 21.5 miles from Katy, TX and 22.5 miles from Downtown Houston.

Houston Botanic Garden

Houston Botanic Garden is back with their acclaimed immersive ‘Lightscape’ holiday event and it promises to be another gorgeous Christmas lights spectacle.

A huge hit with locals last year, Lightscape at Houston Botanic Garden takes you through the garden path via extensive light installations.

These holiday displays and lights are accompanied with captivating music creating a surreal experience fun for all ages.

Add to that the already calming and natural environment at the Houston Botanic Garden, it does make a special holiday display worth the ticket prices.

Lightscape at Houston Botanic Garden starts on November 18th and goes all the way to January 1st.

You need to purchase tickets from their website. Note that there are certain non-operational days and you need to check these while purchasing your ticket.

Winter Wonderland Holiday Bar

Winter Wonderland Holiday Bar is located at Fannin St. Houston.

This is for adults only so its best enjoyed with friends and family over the age of 21.

Nevertheless, the Winter Wonderland popup is one of the most extravagant Christmas events that you can enjoy.

Operating from Wednesday to Sunday till January 4th of the year, you can experience the north pole here at Houston.

There are several themed holiday lights displays with dressed up characters creating a fun festive atmosphere.

The overall idea is to spend a fun, nostalgic holiday evening with your friends and family with good vibes, music, food and drinks.

Christmas Ranch

As the name suggests, Christmas Ranch is a wonderful holiday event organized at a ranch near Cleveland, TX.

Christmas Ranch is absolutely free to enter and is an enjoyable, extensive holiday display and Christmas lights festival for the entire family.

It is genuinely commendable for what you can experience without having to pay for any entry tickets. However, if you wish, you can make a donation that goes to those in need within the community.

You can even bring an ornament to be placed on the community tree. Christmas Ranch is all about the community and bringing families together.

Christmas Ranch near Cleveland is about 78 miles from Katy, TX and about 50 miles from Downtown Houston.

Moody Gardens

Moody Gardens at Galveston, Texas is popular for their aquarium pyramids and rainforests.

However, during the holiday season, it takes a completely different shape with the extensive holiday event Ice Land.

The festivities include a plethora of activities for the entire family including an ice-skating rink, arctic slide, festival of lights, Cirque Joyeux Holiday Show, holiday dinners and a whole lot more.

This is one giant Christmas party that lasts from the third week of November to the first week of January.

Moody Gardens is about 83 miles from Katy, TX and 50 miles from Downtown Houston.

Magical Winter Lights

Magical Winter Lights is a 45-day holiday light show festival at Baytown, TX.

This is a huge event that has 8 themed sections, 100 individual lantern sets and over 6 million lights. If you want to experience a Christmas lights extravaganza, you need to be at Magical Winter Lights.

Each themed section is quite impressive and have immersive light displays that transport you to a completely new world.

Add to that, there are several carnival rides and games, character entertainment and a special holiday show.

All in all, a wonderful time out with the entire family.

As far as location is concerned, Baytown is exactly on the east of Houston, as Katy is to west of Houston. It is a smooth drive from both locations.

Magical Winter Lights is about 62 miles from Katy, TX and about 34 miles from Downtown Houston.

Gullo House

For the uninitiated, Gullo House is a private 5-acre property that has become a huge rage with holiday display enthusiasts thanks to the spectacular Christmas lights put up by the owner each year.

Located in Magnolia, Texas, a tour of the Gullo House property has become a must during the holidays.

Gullo House, also known as Magnolia House, has consistently featured amongst the best Christmas lights near Houston.

Gullo House Christmas Lights is about 34 miles from Katy, TX and 46 miles from Downtown Houston.

San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site

The Christmas activities at the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site is only for a day and this is for those who want to learn about the history of the place rather than view extensive holiday lighting.

The volunteers at the site organize a wonderful day activity that includes learning about the history of the place, learning about what Christmas was like for the settlers and how the celebrations were so different in Mexican Texas.

You need to check on which day of the year in December the event is organized.

San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site is about 20 miles from Katy, TX and about 49 miles from Downtown Houston.

Christmas Katy, Stoughton Court

Christmas Katy at Stoughton Court rose to fame many years ago, after the owner of the house went all-out and put up perhaps the best holiday display and Christmas lights in Katy.

Since then, it has been a long-time Katy favorite for viewing the best Christmas lights in the city.

Most people in and around Katy hope that the tradition will endure and the house will continue to produce the most well-decorated Christmas displays for the foreseeable future.
